DURHAM, NH - In their first America East game of the season, the Northeastern men's basketball team defeated the New Hampshire Wildcats 84-72 on Saturday afternoon at Lundholm Gymnasium. Five NU players in double figures helped lead NU to the 12-point victory.
Freshman Aaron Davis led Northeastern with 15 points, while New Hampshire's Austin Ganly led the Wildcats with 15 of his own. Along with Davis, Toby Brittian (13), Lunzaya Nlandu (10), Sylbrin Robinson (10) and Tim West (10) all had double-digit offensive outings for the Huskies.
NU jumped out to an early 9-2 lead, but New Hampshire reeled off a 7-2 run to cut NU's lead to two at 11-9 with 13:13 remaining in the first half. Both teams would exchange runs for the next few minutes until NU broke off a 14-5 run to stretch its bulge to 14 at the break (43-29).
The Huskies came out of the lockerroom for the second half of action ready to play as they outscored UNH 18-13 to push their lead to a game-high 19 points at the 13:03 mark. New Hampshire would chip away at NU's lead for the rest of the contest, but could not cut the deficit to any less than 12, the game's final margin.
The Huskies defended UNH well throughout the first half, limiting the 'Cats to 29 points and just 25.8 field goal shooting (8-31). New Hampshire also shot itself in the foot by connecting on just 10 of 18 free throws in the first 20 minutes to trail 43-29 at intermission.
Northeastern's West led all scorers at the break with 10 points on 4-5 shooting. Jermaine Hancock came off the bench and sparked NU with seven points, three assists and three steals in just 10 minutes of play. Northeastern played unselfish ball as the Huskies dished out 11 assists on 12 first-half field goals.
Northeastern improves to 3-9 on the season and 1-0 in America East play, while New Hampshire falls to 1-9 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
