WEST HARTFORD, CT - The Northeastern men's basketball team defeated America East foe Hartford, 81-65, at the Chase Family Arena in West Hartford, Conn. on Saturday afternoon.
Ricky Cranford (20) and East Hartford's Dwayne Barnes (16) led NU to the easy victory over the Hawks. Jean Bain had just three points for the Huskies, but added a game-high nine assists.
The first half started and ended on a good note for NU. Cranford took the opening tip from George Aygar and layed it in to give NU a quick 2-0 lead, just three seconds into the game. Marcus Blossom's three at the buzzer gave the Huskies a 14-point edge, 46-32, at the break.
At intermission, Cranford was NU's top scorer with 11, as Blossom added eight. George Aygar also recorded seven points and four rebounds in the first frame of action, while Jean Bain chipped in with five assists and three boards.
The second half was all NU as the Huskies led the whole way to win an important conference matchup. NU is now in a three-way tie for seventh in the conference standings with New Hampshire and Vermont.
Northeastern improves to 7-18 overall and 6-10 in America East action, while Hartford falls to 4-21 on the season and 1-15 in conference play.
The Huskies return home on Feb. 23 as they take on Maine at 7 p.m., followed by New Hampshire on Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. in their final regular season game of the year.
