Hartford scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh on a squeeze play and held on for a 3-2 win over Northeastern to complete a sweep of an America East doubleheader at Friedman Diamond on Friday afternoon. The Hawks won game one 4-2.
Brian Nowak pinch hit and bunted to third with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh, scoring Miguel Marichal with the tie-breaking run as NU's Mike Lomuscio threw to first for the out. Marichal started the rally with a walk against Husky starter Matt Cavallaro. Cory Parker then singled off Cavallaro and Ryan Gardner walked to load the bases. The Huskies had a chance to tie the game in the last of the seventh after Luke Carlin singled and stole second, but Coley O'Donnell grounded out to end the threat and the game.
Jarrett Stawarz went the distance for the Hawks, scattering eight hits and striking out six to earn his first win of the season against five defeats. Cavallaro dropped to 2-3 with the loss.
Hartford jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second innings. The Huskies got a run in the second when Pedro Pena doubled in Ben Beck and then tied the game in the fifth on a solo homer by Carlin.
In game one, the Huskies allowed three unearned runs in a 4-2 loss. NU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Hernan Guerrero led off with a triple and came home to score on a Carlin ground out.
The Hawks tied the game with an unearned run in the fourth and then took the lead for good in the fifth on a two-run homer by Ron Accabo. Matt Denorfia started the inning by reaching on an error by third baseman Lomuscio. NU starting pitcher Chris Walsh then retired the next two batters before Accabo struck his game-winning blow.
Todd Korchin got one run back with a solo home run in the last of the fifth, but the Hawks kept the Huskies off the board after that. Walsh finished as the tough-luck loser, allowing eight hits and one earned run, while striking out five with no walks, in a complete-game effort. NU had won nine of its last 10 games against Hartford. The Hawks and Huskies will meet again in a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at noon.
