Vermont's Kyle Rikert singled in Todd Grzywacz in the top of the eighth as the Catamounts topped the Huskies 7-6. Earlier in the game, Rikert tied the Vermont record for career stolen bases with his 78th. Brendan Ryan was 4-4 with four RBIs to lead the Huskies at the plate. Doug Thomspson (1-0) picked up the win for Vermont, while Justin Bissonnette earned his second save after working a scoreless eighth and stranding the tying run at second. Ken Henry (1-3) took the loss for the Huskies.
With the game tied at five, the Catamounts scored the go-ahead run on a Dennis Moser pinch hit double that drove home Jeff Tarigo in the top of the seventh. NU tied the game in the last of the seventh as Ryan drove in his fourth run of the game with a single that scored Mike Lomuscio. The Huskies then had the bases loaded with one out, but Thompson worked out the jam by getting NU's Todd Korchin to line to third and then striking out pinch-hitter Jordan Thomson to end the threat.
The Huskies led 4-0 after three innings, but the Catamounts got two in the fourth and then tied the game on a two-out, two-run blast by Tarigo off NU starter Chris Walsh in the fifth.
