Northeastern used an eight-run fifth inning to break open a 4-4 game, beating Vermont 12-5 to earn a split in a doubleheader at Friedman Diamond on Sunday. The second game of the twinbill was called after five and a half innings due to darkness. Vermont won game one by score of 10-4.
Vermont took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first of game two on a Mike Cole double that scored Jeff Barry from first. The Huskies struck back to take a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Coley O'Donnell. Vermont chipped away at the NU lead, scoring once in the third and twice in the fifth to tie the game 4-4.
The Huskies scored eight runs on four hits, six walks, and a hit batsman in the fifth as NU sent 14 batters to the plate. Vermont used five pitchers in the inning, three of whom failed to retire a batter.
Freshman Jordan Thompson (2-1) pitched all five innings in his first appearance at Friedman Diamond, picking up the victory. He struck out six and allowed only six hits. Andy Kumming (1-2) took the loss for Vermont.
Vermont won the first game by a 10-4 count, scoring five times in the top of the fourth to break open a 2-2 game. Brian Robinson (3-1) struck out 11 Huskies in earning the complete game victory. Jason Gillespie (0-2) took the loss for the Huskies. Cole was 2-4 with a double, a triple and three RBIs for Vermont.
