BOSTON, MA – Jean Bain scored 17 points and Tim West added a career-high 16 to lead Northeastern to a blowout 91-65 win over Stony Brook in an America East men's basketball game at Solomon Court on Thursday night.
NU improved to 4-11 with the win, 2-2 in America East play. The Seawolves fell to 2-13, 1-3 in the conference, with their seventh loss in the past eight games. Larry Jennings led four Stony Brook players in double figures with 14 points. Mike Konopka had 12 points off the bench, David Munir added 11 and JonPaul Kobryn netted 10. West was 7-9 from the floor and added a career-high eight rebounds. Bain finished 6-9 from the floor, including 4-6 from three-point range.
It was NU's largest margin of victory over a Div. I opponent since a 38-point win over Boston University at the end of the 1992-93 regular season.
After leading by 16 at the half, NU opened up the second frame with a 10-5 spurt to extend its advantage to 21, up 58-37 with 17:02 remaining. The Seawolves used a 12-3 spurt to cut the Husky lead to 12, 61-49 at the 11:40 mark, but did not get any closer. NU's hot shooting (54.7 percent) continued as did the Seawolves' sloppy play (27 turnovers). The Huskies' final 26-point lead was their largest of the night.
The Huskies took a 48-32 lead at intermission behind the production of Bain and West. Bain was 4-6 from the field, 3-4 from behind the three-point arc, with 12 points, five assists and two steals at the break. West was 4-7 from the floor with 12 points and six rebounds heading into the lockerroom.
West was NU's offense for the first five and a half minutes of the game as he netted 10 of his team's first 12 points to give the Huskies an early 12-5 edge at the 14:31 mark of the first half. He was key in the Huskies' quick start as they later pushed their lead to 16, 25-9, with 10:27 to go.
Stony Brook would chip away at the Huskies' lead and cut the margin to eight, 33-25, with 4:34 remaining in the first half. Ron Everhart's squad responded by pushing its lead to 17 points twice in the last two minutes, a first-half high. The Huskies closed the half up 16, 48-32. Leading the Seawolves at intermission was Jennings with nine points.
Next up for the Huskies is another conference foe, Binghamton, on Saturday at 1 p.m., also at Solomon Court.
