Michael Cipriano scored the game-winner in overtime as Northeastern defeated Vermont 4-3 on Saturday night. The win was the Huskies fourth straight and vaults them into first place in the America East standings.
In a game that had playoff intensity, NU senior Nate Houghton blasted a shot in overtime that Vermont goalkeeper David Sullivan stopped, but could not corral. Cipriano gathered the rebound right in front of the net and hammered it home at the 95:52 mark, to give Northeastern its first victory over Vermont since 1996.
Junior Atha Kirkopoulos started off the scoring just 4:12 into the game by taking a nice lead pass from Cipriano and beating Sullivan (6 saves) to the ball, before he placed it far post for the early lead. Vermont would tie the score at one when Adam Wallace tallied his second goal of the season on a penalty kick, as an NU player was called for a hand ball in the box.
Wallace would strike again just 3:38 into the second half, heading home a great cross from junior Ethan Hutchins. Hutchins would be on the other end of things at the 67:58 mark, heading home a Tim Parisi corner kick to give the Catamounts a 3-1 lead.
"Vermont really started to control the tempo," Northeastern coach Ed Matz said of the two UVM goals. "We wanted to speed things up and keep the ball moving faster."
Vermont (8-5-1, 3-1-1) seemed to control the momentum of the game, until NU senior LeRoy Watkins wound up for a shot that Sullivan looked to be in place to save. The ball was then deflected by a UVM defender and found its way into the back of the net.
Just under a minute later, Cipriano took a long lead pass and was heading to the goal when a UVM defender took him down from behind, just outside the box. Kirkopoulos then took the free kick from 19 yards out and some how managed to slide it past both the Vermont wall of players and Sullivan to tie the game at three.
"This was a huge win for us, especially to come back from a 3-1 deficit," Matz would add. "We are playing great soccer right now."
Northeastern goalie Sergio Saccoccio made one save on the night, as the win improves NU's record to 7-6-2 overall and 4-1-0 in America East action. The Huskies are now 4-1-2 in overtime games this season and 4-1-1 at Parsons Field. Northeastern will look to extend its winning streak to five, when it hosts Boston University in a key conference matchup on Wednesday starting at 6 p.m.
