Northeastern lost to Dartmouth 2-1 in double overtime on Wednesday at Parsons Field. Juan Romero netted his second goal of the game in the 108th minute, to give the Big Green a come-from-behind victory.
Just 4:28 into the game, junior Atha Kirkopoulos dribbled down the center of the field and sent a through pass to senior LeRoy Watkins. Watkins raced down the left side of the field, gathered the pass and slid one past Dartmouth goalie Doug Carr to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
Just as quickly as Northeastern scored to open the game, Dartmouth did the same in the second half. The Big Green's Rob Daly dribbled down the left side, tightly marked by Oumar Thiam, when he blasted a desperation shot that was going wide until Romero came in trailing the play to put it home and knot the game at one.
Both teams had their opportunities, but came up short until the second overtime. With just 2:17 left to play, Zach Schwartz provided a nice cross that Romero headed home past a diving Sergio Saccoccio for the win.
Northeastern had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the second half, as Carr got caught too far out of the net and couldn't control a loose ball. Bennie Prueske took control and dribbled through two Dartmouth defenders before blasting a wide-open shot from 20 yards out that sailed high.
"I thought that we played very well in the second half. We had more chances to end the game, but we just couldn't capitalize," Northeastern coach Ed Matz said after the game.
Dartmouth improves to 2-4 on the season, while Northeastern drops to 3-5-2. Saccoccio played very well and made five huge saves in net for the Huskies. NU will next play at New Hampshire on Saturday. It is the Huskies' America East opener.
