Boston College 2, Northeastern 1

Northeastern fell to Boston College 2-1 in the second round of the NCAA College Cup on Wednesday afternoon at Parsons Field. The game was changed from Boston College's Newton Soccer Complex to NU's Parsons Field and delayed one hour due to snow. The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the second half, but BC rallied with two goals in a span of 3:51 to advance.

Both squads came out very aggressive. BC had a couple of great opportunities early on, but couldn't convert. The Huskies almost put one in at the 24:38 mark as junior Atha Kirkopoulos sent a free kick into the box that fellow junior Bennie Prueske redirected with his head. The ball went right to sophomore Joe Parrish, who got a foot on it, but his shot went wide.

NU sophomore Michael Cipriano almost put the Huskies up 1-0 with just under nine minutes left in the first half, but his blast from 20 yards out sailed just over the crossbar. There was a great crowd on hand despite the conditions, filling one side of the bleachers, and the fans saw a very evenly played first half.

BC came out and had two great threats in the beginning of the second half. John Krause looked to have a breakaway one-on-one opportunity just five minutes in, but was called offsides. Just three minutes later, Bill Arnault took a lead pass on the left side and tried to sneak one in the near post, but his attempt went wide. Northeastern finally broke the scoreless tie and went up 1-0 as Kirkopoulos carried the ball in the left corner before sending a cross to the middle that would produce the Huskies' final goal of the season. Cipriano didn't let the Kirkopoulos pass hit the ground, placing it by BC goalkeeper Kyle Singer at the 63:51 mark. The Huskies controlled the action on the Boston College side of the field for much of the second half, but the Eagles would rally for the win.

BC tied it at the 73:22 mark, as an unmarked Arnault hammered home a Casey Schmidt cross to make it 1-1. The Eagles would strike again quickly, as Schmidt was on the giving end for the second time in the game, crossing the ball to a wide open Neil Krause, who beat NU goalie Sergio Saccoccio for a 2-1 lead.

"I think my guys played really well, but over the last 18-19 minutes our youth really showed," said NU head coach Ed Matz, who was America East Coach of the Year after leading his team to regular season and conference tournament titles.

NU had two great looks to tie the game, but couldn't finish either one. Kirkopoulos sent a pass into the box with just under 11 minutes remaining that Prueske tried to head in, but he just missed. Oumar Thiam then had a rocket from 40 yards out that BC goalie Singer had to jump and deflect over the crossbar.

"Of course we are very disappointed," Matz said. "Especially anytime you give up a one-goal lead that late."

NU ends its season 12-8-2, while Boston College advances to the round of 16. Saccoccio ended the day with three saves and Singer had five. NU outshot BC 16-12. First Half:
