Northeastern 5, Binghamton 0

Northeastern jumped out to a big halftime lead on its way to a 5-0 victory over Binghamton Sunday at Parsons Field. With the win the Huskies become the America East regular season champions and will make their fourth straight postseason appearance.

In his final regular season game at Parsons Field as a Husky, senior Nate Houghton came out on a mission. Just over 19 minutes in junior Atha Kirkopoulos lined up for a free kick deep in Binghamton territory after LeRoy Watkins was taken down just outside the box. Kirkopoulos then lofted a cross through traffic that Houghton headed home for a 1-0 lead.

Houghton would strike again just four minutes later by racing down a long lead pass from junior Oumar Thiam and blasting it back post. Binghamton goalie Matt Nolan got a hand on it and slowed it down, but it still trickled in for the senior's second goal of the afternoon.

Freshman Jay Betley tallied his first career goal at the 33:53 mark off a feed from Kirkopoulos to make it 3-0. Betley trailed the play, but Kirkopoulos controlled the ball and gave him a nice drop pass as he charged in and hammered it home from 30 yards out.

Junior Julian Daniels would be the second consecutive Husky to net his first career goal at NU when he controlled a loose rebound and put one past Nolan at the 42:55 mark to give Northeastern a comfortable lead heading into the break.

"We really rebounded well and came out very sharpe after the loss to Albany on Wednesday," said NU head coach Ed Matz after the game. "Nate (Houghton) came out with two early goals which I was glad to see because he is capable of carrying the team."

Betley would wrap up the NU scoring in the second half, netting his second goal of the game. Kirkopoulos recorded his third assist of the night by lofting a free kick from 40 yards out that found Betley's head in front of the net as he sent it in.

"It was a very good effort by the entire team tonight," Matz would add.

During the game Northeastern found out that Boston University had defeated Vermont 5-2 and with the win NU would gain sole position of first place and the #1 seed heading into the America East Championship. The Huskies will host New Hampshire on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Parsons Field. The Huskies will look to avenge one of their two conference losses, 3-2 in Durham, N.H. on Oct. 5.
