Northeastern 93, Curry 53

Northeastern defeated Div. III Curry 93-53 on Tuesday night at Solomon Court. With the win, NU improves to 3-4 on the season, while Curry falls to 2-6 overall.

Northeastern was paced by junior Sylbrin Robinson, who notched his second double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Jose Juan Barea also posted a double-double, the first of his career, with 13 points and 10 assists.

Also scoring in double-figures for NU was Aaron Davis (11 points), Jamaar Walker (11 points) and Javorie Wilson (10 points). The Colonels were led by Glen Goff's 16 points, while Kyle McNamar posted 10 points and eight rebounds in the losing effort.

Curry's Will Freeman stole a Cornellius Wright pass and went the distance for a layup to cut NU's lead to 25, 50-25, with 19:41 to go in the game, but the Colonels would get no closer the rest of the way. NU pushed its lead to a game-high 46 points twice in the second half before Husky head coach Ron Everhart called off the dogs. After trailing 87-41 with four minutes to go, Curry closed the game on a 12-6 run to give the game its final 93-53 margin. Despite being outshot 44.4 percent to 43.0 percent, NU outrebounded (54-31) and out-assisted (24-13) Curry to come away with the blowout win.

The Colonels played the Huskies tough in the early going as NU led by one, 18-17, with 9:13 remaining in the first frame of action. Northeastern took control with a 20-0 run over the next 5:31 to take a 38-17 lead at the 3:42 mark.

The Huskies' run was sparked by a Jesse Dunn dunk and sustained by the team's aggressive trapping press. NU forced the Colonels into 19 first-half turnovers, compared to its 10.

Following its 20-0 run, Northeastern would push its lead to a first-half high 29 points, 50-21, with a Davis three-pointer. Curry closed the half with a Goff layup to cut the lead to 50-23 at the break.

Prior to the game, Barea was recognized by the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration for being the first Puerto Rican born men's basketball player in Northeastern history. Barea will play in his home country as the Huskies next travel to Carolina, Puerto Rico to take part in the 2002 San Juan Shootout. NU faces Troy State in first round action on Dec. 20 at 11 a.m.
