Troy State 89, Northeastern 72

Northeastern lost to Troy State 89-72 in the opening round of the 2002 San Juan Shootout in Caguas, Puerto Rico on Friday. NU freshman Jose Juan Barea, a native of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, netted a game-high 21 points in the losing effort. Also chipping in for the Huskies was Javorie Wilson (15 points), Adrian Martinez (14 points) and Sylbrin Robinson (10 points). The Trojans' well-rounded offense produced five players in double-figures, headlined by 15 points apiece from Greg Davis and Marcus Millhouse. Troy State's final 17-point margin was its largest of the game.

The Huskies were outshot 51.5 percent to 35.2 percent and outrebounded 44-38 in the loss. NU forced 23 Troy State turnovers, compared to just 18 of its own.

After NU fell behind 41-29 at the half, Troy State pushed its lead to 15 points, 49-34, courtesy of an Eddie Baker three-pointer at the 17-minute mark. NU's Wilson and Martinez then buried consecutive threes to cut the TSU lead to nine, 49-40, with 16:08 to play.

TSU extended its lead back to 14, 58-44, before NU went on an 11-2 run to cut the lead to five, 60-55 with 11:25 to go. The highlight of the Northeastern surge was a monstrous alleyoop dunk from Robinson off a feed from Barea. NU would get no closer, however, as the Trojans responded again in a big way with a 19-9 spurt to build the lead back to a comfortable 15 points, 79-64.

The Trojans jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before Wilson got the Huskies on the board with a 15-foot jumper. Both teams traded buckets for the next five minutes until NU took its first lead of the game, 15-14, on an Aaron Davis three-pointer with 12:40 remaining in the half.

NU last led in the game 25-22, at 8:28, courtesy of a Jamaar Walker putback layup. The Trojans then closed the half on a 19-4 run, which saw just one Husky field goal at the 1:58 mark. NU went 6:30 without scoring a bucket, due in part to poor shooting, but also credit the tough defense of Troy State, which did not allow the Huskies many clean looks at the basket. NU was outshot 45.7 percent to 28.9 percent in the first 20 minutes of play and trailed 41-29 at intermission. Barea led the Huskies in the first frame of action with seven points, while Millhouse paced TSU with eight points.

On a bad note for NU, junior center Cornellius Wright left the game in the first half with a shoulder injury and did not return to the court for the second half. Wright remained on the bench with his shoulder iced and wrapped for the second half of action.

Next up, Northeastern will face the loser of the Duquesne-Sacred Heart game (Friday, 3:30 p.m. Eastern) on Saturday at 11 a.m. Eastern.
