Northeastern defeated Sacred Heart 91-74 in the second round of the 2002 San Juan Shootout on Saturday afternoon in Caguas, Puerto Rico. The Huskies improve to 4-5 overall, while the winless Pioneers drop to 0-7 on the season.
Six Huskies scored in double figures with freshman Jose Juan Barea leading the way with 17 points, six rebounds and five steals. Jesse Dunn (15 points), Sylbrin Robinson (14 points, 13 rebounds), Aaron Davis (13 points), Jamaar Walker (12 points, six assists) and Javorie Wilson (12 points) were the other Huskies in double digits. Sacred Heart was paced by 23 points from Maurice Bailey and 19 from Mike Samuels.
For the game, NU outrebounded SHU 47-35 and outshot the Pioneers 48.4 percent to 40.0 percent. Despite connecting on just 16 of their first 24 free throw attempts, the Huskies made nine straight down the stretch to ice their fourth victory of the season.
Trailing 44-34 at the half, Sacred Heart opened up the second frame on a 12-4 run to cut the NU lead to two, 48-46, with 15:51 to go. Bailey was the catalyst of the surge as he scored eight of the 12 points in the run.
Northeastern would stretch its advantage back to six, 59-53, but Sacred Heart rallied with an 8-2 run to tie the game, 61-61, with 9:49 to go. NU's Dunn then went to the line and made one of two free throws, followed up by a deep three-pointer from the top of the key, which sparked a decisive 13-0 run spanning 3:01 to open a 74-61 lead.
The Pioneers once again ripped off five unanswered points to cut the lead to eight, 74-66, at 6:15, but from then on it was all NU. Walker scored eight of NU's next 10 points and the Huskies cruised to the 91-74 victory.
Sacred Heart jumped out to an early 7-3 lead with 17:25 left in the first frame of action before NU reeled of a 25-6 run. The Huskies' uptempo offense and aggressive pressure defense wreaked havoc on the Pioneers as Northeastern took a 28-13 lead with 9:19 to go in the first half. NU dominated in the paint on its early run as 18 of the 25 points came down low.
SHU responded with a 9-2 spurt of its own to trail by eight, 30-22, with 8:05 remaining. NU then ran off six straight points, started by a Davis three-pointer, to increase its bulge to 14, 36-22. Both teams would remain nearly even the rest of the half as NU took a 44-34 lead into the half.
Davis, Barea and Wilson all scored nine points in the first frame to pace the Huskies, while Sacred Heart was led by Bailey's six points. NU outshot SHU 51.6 to 41.2 percent and outrebounded the Pioneers by one, 21-20. Both teams shot free throws at an unimpressive 57.1 percent clip, with NU making 8-14 and SHU netting 4-7.
On Sunday at 1 p.m., Northeastern will meet James Madison, which defeated Puerto Rico-Mayaguez 88-58 on Saturday afternoon.
