Romuald Augustin had 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Ryan Gomes also had a double-double with 20 points and 10 boards, to lead Providence to an 80-61 win over Northeastern in a non-conference game at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Saturday night.
Aaron Davis led the Huskies with 12 points, 10 coming in the first half. Sylbrin Robinson and Jose Juan Barea each netted 11 points for NU (5-6), and Javorie Wilson had 10. Robinson was 5-5 from the floor with seven boards and three blocks. Jamaar Walker had eight points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Huskies. Tuukka Kotti added 13 points for the Friars (5-3).
Robinson made a layup with 16:44 to go in the game to give the Huskies a 45-42 edge, but the Friars scored eight straight points to open a 50-45 lead with 11:53 to go. NU remained cold, making just 2-15 shots to start the second half, before Wilson converted a three-point play with 11:17 left to break a scoreless drought of 5:15 and make it a 50-48 game.
The Friars continued to go inside to Gomes, who scored seven straight points for Providence, including a pair of free throws to start a decisive 12-3 run after NU neared within 51-50. Sheiku Kabba and Kotti made consecutive three-pointers to cap the surge and give the Friars a 62-53 lead with 7:14 left. The Huskies routinely got good looks at the basket, but missed several short shots and got no closer the rest of the way. Providence kept pulling away and built a 16-point lead, 73-57, after two Kabba free throws with just over three minutes left. The Friars' largest edge of the night was 21, 80-59, with 26 seconds left.
After falling behind by 11 early on, the Huskies rallied to take the lead. Down 20-11 with 12:36 to go in the first half after Gomes scored on a nifty inside move, the Huskies went on a 15-4 run to take their first advantage of the night, 26-24, on a Davis basket with 7:47 left. After Kareem Hayletts tied the game at 26 with a layup, Davis canned a three-pointer for a 29-26 Husky edge with 7:08 to go before the break. The rest of the half was evenly played with the teams trading baskets and the lead four times.
Gomes made a pair of free throws with 3:09 to go for a 37-35 Providence lead and the Friars' last points of the half. NU scored the final six points of the half to take a 41-35 edge into intermission. Davis had 10 first-half points on 4-5 field goal shooting, including a pair of three-pointers, to lead the Huskies. Robinson added eight points and six rebounds in the opening half. Gomes led all scorers in the first half with 12 and Augustin netted nine points.
Up 6-4, Providence used an 11-2 run to jump out to a quick 17-6 lead after just five minutes of play. Augustin had six points in the spurt. The Friars made seven of their first 11 field goal tries, while NU made just three of nine before the first media timeout at the 14:59 mark.
