Northeastern completed a two-game trip to the western U.S. with a 71-56 loss to Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz. on Wednesday. The Huskies dropped to 2-3 on the season, while the Lumberjacks improved to 3-2 overall.
The Huskies were led by junior transfer Javorie Wilson with 15 points, while freshman point guard Jose Juan Barea had 14 before fouling out. NAU's Ryan McDade dominated in the paint as he tallied 29 points and 17 rebounds.
The Lumberjacks came out strong as they jumped to an early 25-5 lead just 10 minutes into the game and never looked back. The early deficit was too much for NU to overcome. The first half was not pleasant for the Huskies as they trailed by 12, 32-20, at the break. NU shot just 25.0 percent in the first frame of action compared to NAU's 42.9 percent. Northeastern was outrebounded 27-10 in a half dominated by the Lumberjacks. NAU's McDade equalled NU's total of 10 rebounds in the first 20 minutes of play, adding 13 points before intermission.
Only four Huskies scored in the first half, with Wilson (nine points) and Sylbrin Robinson (seven points) leading the way. The Huskies did force the Lumberjacks into 18 turnovers compared to their 12, but could not capitalize on NAU's mistakes.
With 3:12 remaining in the second half, Robinson fouled NAU's Adrian Hayes and came down awkwardly. Robinson was helped off the floor and did not return to action for the Huskies.
NU head coach Ron Everhart spent Tuesday night in a Flagstaff hospital due to complications from an appendectomy he received on Monday, Nov. 25. Everhart was released from the hospital prior to game time and made his way to Walkup Skydome. He was on the sideline for the game, but assistant coach Frank Martin handled most of the coaching duties.
Northeastern now has a season-long nine days off before heading to Penn State to face the Nittany Lions on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 1 p.m.
