BOSTON - Despite leading by as many as 15 in the first half, the Northeastern men's basketball team was defeated 63-57 by crosstown rival Boston University on Thursday night at Case Gymnasium. The Terriers outscored the Huskies 39-23 in the second half to come away with the victory.
Senior Jean Bain was the only Husky in double figures with 14 points. Ryan Butt had a game-high 16 points to pace the Terriers, while teammate Chaz Carr netted 14 points. With the loss, Northeastern falls to 6-19 overall and 4-10 in America East action, while Boston University improves to 16-9 on the season and 10-3 in league play.
NU led by 10, 34-24, at intermission, but BU opened up the second half on a 14-5 run to cut the Husky lead to one, 39-38, with 12:43 remaining in the game. A Carr three-pointer for BU with 9:04 left gave the Terriers their first lead of the game, 48-46.
Two Jamaar Walker free throws with 5:05 remaining gave NU its final lead of the game, 54-53. The Huskies would not score another field goal and added just three foul shots the rest of the way, while BU reeled off a 10-3 game-ending run. The Terrier run was started by a Paul Seymour three-pointer with 4:54 remaining to put BU up for good.
In the first half, both teams traded buckets for the first six minutes as the game was tied at 10, with 13:59 on the clock. NU then went on a 22-7 run to take its largest lead of the game, 32-17, with 2:01 left on the first-half clock. The Terriers would close the first frame of action on a 7-2 run to cut NU's lead to 10, 34-24, at the break.
The Huskies shot just 20 percent (6-30) from the field in the second half, while the Terriers netted 50 percent (12-24) en route to the comeback win. BU outrebounded NU 44-32.
Next up the Huskies travel to New York as they take on the Seawolves of Stony Brook on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m.
