Memphis 2, Northeastern 1

Memphis defeated Northeastern 2-1 on Saturday to claim the Memphis Diadora Tournament championship at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Sophomore John Reilly finished off a Dayton O'Brien cross by heading the ball past NU goalkeeper Sergio Saccaccio in the 47th minute. Reilly's second goal of the season proved to be the game-winner in a contest that had plenty of excitement for the 534 fans in attendance.

After O'Brien broke a scoreless tie with a crafty goal in the 38th minute, momentum quickly switched to Northeastern when Tiger midfielder Peter Cummings and goalkeeper Clark Talley were both given red cards within a five-minute span. Cumming's caution came at the 39:08 mark while Talley's followed at the 43:55 mark, leaving Memphis two players down for the remainder of the match.

NU took only a few seconds to capitalize on the situation when LeRoy Watkins sent the Huskies' first attempt during the two-man advantage past UM backup goalkeeper Brian Baytos to square the match at one. The game remained tied for final minute of the first half, but the score would change again just over two minutes into the second half.

This time it was the Tigers who found the back of the net as Memphis regained the lead when O'Brien dribbled into open space and found Reilly on a cross from the left wing that the sophomore headed into the back of the net.

With a one-goal lead, the Memphis defense took over the contest. Baytos settled down and held the Huskies scoreless after intermission, but it was not easy for the freshman who was making his collegiate debut. Northeastern had plenty of chances to tie the contest, however Baytos was strong between the pipes, recording five saves as the Huskies reeled off 12 shots in the second half. Memphis freshman Omar Jarun, a reserve forward, added a pair of assists in the contest, including setting up O'Brien for the game-winning cross. Junior Graham Gibbs anchored the back-line of the Tigers' defense to warrant Tournament MVP honors.
