Northeastern dropped to 7-8 overall and 0-2 in America East action with an 82-75 loss at Hartford on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies led by as many as 15 in the first half, but lost their second straight league game to start their conference schedule.
The Huskies were paced by Javorie Wilson's 20 points and 10 rebounds, marking the first double-double of his career, while Jose Juan Barea added a team-high 21 points. The leader for Hartford was Aaron Cook (18 points), while four other Hawks also scored in double figures.
Hartford outscored Northeastern 42-37 in the second half as the Hawks improved to 7-6 overall and a perfect 3-0 in league action. The Hawks opened up the second half on a 10-2 run, taking a 50-40 lead with 14:04 to go.
Hartford later extended its bulge to a game-high 19 points, 70-51, with 5:25 remaining in the contest. Northeastern would chip away at the Hawk lead but it was too little, too late. NU got no closer than six, 81-75, with 11 seconds left.
Despite leading by as many as 15 in the first half, Northeastern trailed 40-38 at the half. Hartford jumped out to an early 8-5 lead at the 15:13 mark, but for the next five and a half minutes it was all Northeastern.
The Huskies reeled off a 16-0 run to take a solid 21-8 lead with 9:47 remaining. NU would later push its first-half edge to 15, 29-14, at 7:54. With just under eight minutes to go in the half, the Huskies held a 17-6 rebounding edge. The Hawks dominated the boards, 10-1, from that point and came all the way back to take the lead.
The Hawks closed the half on a 26-9 run over the final 7:54, taking the two-point lead into intermission. NU was paced by eight points apiece from Barea and Adam Drain. Leading the way for Hartford was Ryan Stys with nine.
NU outrebounded the Hawks 18-16 and outshot Hartford 50.0 percent to 40.6 percent in the first frame of action, but still trailed at the break.
Next up for Northeastern is Maine on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at Solomon Court (7 p.m.). Wednesday's game marks the conference home opener for the Huskies.
