Maine 90, Northeastern 76

Maine made 14-20 three-point attempts on its way to a 90-76 America East win over Northeastern at Solomon Court on Wednesday night. The Black Bears improve to 7-9 overall and 2-2 in America East action, while the Huskies fall to 7-9 on the season and 0-3 in league play.

The Black Bears were paced by Kevin Reed's 20 points on 6-10 three-point shooting, while Justin Rowe was solid all around for Maine as he tallied 12 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocks in 37 minutes of action. NU's Sylbrin Robinson led the NU assault with 18 points and Javorie Wilson chipped in with 15 points and eight rebounds.

After leading 38-36 at the half, the Black Bears opened the second frame on a 23-13 spurt. Maine's run was capped by a Derrick Jackson three-pointer, giving his team a 12-point lead, 61-49, with 13:31 left in the game.

Northeastern then fought back as the Huskies reeled off a 9-0 surge of their own to come within three, 61-58, with 10:40 remaining. Cornellius Wright was the spark of the NU run as he tallied seven of the Huskies' nine points, including a three-point play and a put-back dunk. He also took a charge on the defensive end.

From that point on it was all Maine as the Black Bears went on a 15-2 decisive run to forge a 16-point advantage, 76-60, with 3:24 remaining. Maine's Freddy Petkus capped the Maine run with a three-pointer, the Black Bears' final trey of the evening.

Maine took a 38-36 lead into the half after being up by as many as 13 in the first frame of action. The Black Bears started off the game hot as they connected on eight of their first 11 field goal attempts, building a 24-11 lead with 11:07 to go. Rowe's presence in the paint was established early for Maine as he recorded all four of his first-half blocks in the first 10 minutes of the game.

The Huskies then applied some tenacious full-court pressure defense, which sparked a 22-6 run, giving NU a three-point lead, 33-30, with 2:53 remaining in the first half. Three-point field goals and free throws were crucial in the Huskies' big run as they netted three deep balls and went 5-6 from the line. Over NU's surge the Black Bears' hot-shooting ceased as they were just 1-10 from the field.

Northeastern's Wilson was the half's leading scoring with 13 points and five rebounds, while Joe Campbell paced Maine with seven points. As a team, the Black Bears outshot the Huskies 50.0 percent to 38.7 percent and outrebounded NU 21-14. Northeastern, however, managed to force 16 Maine turnovers, compared to just eight of its own.

Next up for the Huskies is New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon at Solomon Court. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
