Northeastern Huskies

Men's Basketball

Northeastern 99, Loyola 69

Six Huskies scored in double figures as the Northeastern men's basketball team routed Loyola (Md.) 99-69 in non-conference action at Solomon Court on Thursday night. NU improves to 6-6 on the season, while the Greyhounds fall to 2-7 overall.

Northeastern's Sylbrin Robinson (13 points – 14 rebounds), Jose Juan Barea (14 points – 8 assists), Javorie Wilson (18 points), Adam Drain (14 points), Jesse Dunn (14 points) and Aaron Davis (13 points) all notched double-digits in scoring. Pacing the Greyhounds was Thomas Donovan with 11 points.

NU dominated the Greyhounds in nearly every statistical category. The Huskies outshot (46.0 percent to 38.0 percent), outrebounded (44-38) and had more assists (19-13) then Loyola.

Northeastern opened the second half on a 14-6 run, capped by a Wilson two-handed dunk, to push its lead to 23 points, 64-41, with 13:46 remaining in the game. From then on it was all NU as the Huskies stretched their lead to 28 points, 73-45, at the 9:42 mark. Northeastern later increased its lead to a game-high 32 points, 99-67, with 51 seconds left.

The 30-point victory for Northeastern was its largest win over a Div. I team since the Huskies downed crosstown rival Boston University 96-58 in their 1992-93 regular season finale. The total of 99 points marks the fifth time this season the Huskies have eclipsed the 90-point plateau, with Northeastern winning all five contests handedly. Both teams combined to shoot 54-76 from the free throw line, with NU going 28-37 and Loyola 26-39. The 76 combined free throw attempts in the game set a single-game school record for Northeastern.

The Huskies used hot three-point shooting and tough rebounding to take a 50-35 lead to intermission. As a team, NU connected on 10-19 three-pointers (52.6 percent) and outrebounded the Greyhounds 21-16. Leading Northeastern's long-range assault was Davis, who was 3-7 from beyond the arc, while Dunn, Wilson and Adrian Martinez each netted two apiece. Robinson was NU's top rebounder in the first frame of action with six boards.

Northeastern jumped out to an early six-point lead, 8-2, with 18:29 remaining in the first half and would push its lead to 10, 20-10, at the 12:03 mark. Twelve of NU's first 20 points came via the three and 18 of its next 30 points were from deep balls as well. The Huskies attempted more three-point field goals (19) than two-point field goals (14) in the first half.

NU increased its bulge to a first-half-high 18 points, 50-32, following a Jamaar Walker layup with 25 seconds remaining, but Loyola's Bobby Bossman netted a three with two seconds to go to cut the lead to 15, 50-35, at the break. Bernard Allen had six points and eight rebounds for the Greyhounds in the first half, while teammate Lucious Jordan netted a team-high eight points.

Next up for Northeastern is Boston College on Sunday at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill (2 p.m.). Please note this game was originally schedule for Saturday, but has been changed to Sunday.
