Northeastern rallied all the way back from a 17-point second-half deficit before having a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but Adam Drain's three-pointer from the corner came up short and Stony Brook went on to a 72-67 America East win at the SB Sports Complex on Wednesday night.
Stony Brook improved to 7-9, 2-4 in the conference. The Huskies fell to 8-10, 1-4 in America East. Cori Spencer led the Seawolves with 13 points and had the rebound of Drain's missed three-pointer with two seconds to go. Spencer made a pair of free throws to put the game out of reach. Hendrik Feist and Jairus McCollum added 12 points apiece for Stony Brook. Javorie Wilson netted 24 points (one short of his season high) to pace the Huskies, while Sylbrin Robinson scored 13 and Jamaar Walker 10.
Stony Brook controlled the tempo and limited the Northeastern offense for the first 35 minutes of game, but the Huskies staged a furious rally. Down 50-33 with 11:05 showing, NU started chipping away at the deficit. Mike Konopka (10 points) seemed to apply the dagger when he nailed a three-pointer to make it a 59-45 game with 4:55 showing. The Huskies got it back down to nine, but Bobby Santiago made it a seemingly comfortable 64-53 lead with 2:26 left.
Lousy Stony Brook free throw shooting and Wilson's heroics nearly combined for an amazing Husky comeback. Mike Orfini gave the Seawolves a 67-59 lead by making one of two free throws with 39 seconds to go, but Wilson made the second of three straight three-pointers to cut the hole to 67-62 at the 31-second mark. McCollum then made one of two foul shots and Jose Juan Barea drove the paint for a layup to cut it to four, 68-64. Santiago could only make one of his two free shots, before Wilson made another three-pointer from the top to make the score 69-67 with 12 seconds left. Spencer then missed the first of his two free throws, but made the second, preparing NU's play to Drain for the tying shot.
NU trailed 31-25 at the half, but Stony Brook started the second half with a 10-4 spurt to open a 41-29 lead with 14 minutes to go. The advantage kept growing as Stony Brook capitalized on its open looks and pulled several offensive rebounds to keep possessions alive. D.J. Munir sank a three-pointer to give the Seawolves their largest lead of the night, 50-33, with 11:05 to go.
Stony Brook had the clamps on America East's highest-scoring offense for most of the game, holding Barea to 3-12 shooting and keeping Wilson quiet until the final minutes.
