Freshman point guard Jose Juan Barea scored 19 points and added a career-high eight rebounds to lead Northeastern to a 59-48 win over Binghamton in an America East game at Solomon Court on Wednesday.
NU improved to 10-10 overall, 3-4 in America East, with its third win in the last four games. Binghamton fell to 10-8, 5-3 in the conference. Aaron Davis came off the bench to net 16 points for the Huskies, while Javorie Wilson added 10. Charles Baker led the Bearcats with 14 points and Stanley Ocitti had 12.
Baker made a three-pointer to cut NU's edge to four, 41-37, with 12:12 left, but Davis answered with a three-pointer to make it 44-37 and start a decisive 9-2 run. A dunk by Nick Billings (eight blocks, seven rebounds) made it a 44-39 game before the Huskies ran off six straight points. The surge started with a tip-in from Cornellius Wright, followed by a Davis layup and finished by a pair of Barea free throws to make it a 50-39 bulge with 8:04 left.
Binghamton managed to get within six, 54-48 with 3:15 showing, but could get no closer as the Bearcats missed their final six field goal tries of the game and NU made five of six free throws down the stretch to secure the win. Binghamton made just 8-29 (27.6 percent) from the floor in the second half, including a dismal 2-15 (13.3 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. NU also was cold, adding to the sloppy play after intermission my making only 7-29 (24.1 percent) field goal tries.
NU jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead as the Bearcats failed to scored until a Baker three-pointer 2:48 into the game. Binghamton completed a 14-7 run capped by another Baker three-pointer to cut NU's edge to one, 15-14, with 9:40 left in the opening half. The Bearcats would eventually take a 21-20 advantage, their only lead of the night, after a Brandon Carter three-pointer with 6:21 left before the break. The teams traded baskets for the next two minutes until the Huskies turned a slim 27-26 lead into a 37-28 cushion by outscoring Binghamton 10-2 in the last 4:30 of the half. Barea ended the spurt with a driving fastbreak layup with just under a minute to go. It was NU's first-ever win over Binghamton in just the third meeting of the series since the Bearcats joined America East last season.
