The Northeastern women's soccer team picked up a win in its first America East matchup of the season, knocking off Binghamton, 3-0, at Parsons Field on Thursday afternoon.
Northeastern came out aggressive in the first half, getting a number of good scoring opportunities. After posting some key saves early on, Bearcat starting goalkeeper Kristie Bowers went down with an injury, forcing her to leave the game. Her replacement, freshman Kristy Doerner, also came up with a big stop on a shot by freshman Siobhan Howard to keep the game scoreless with just under nine minutes to play.
The Huskies finally got on the board with 1:20 to play in the first, when a Binghamton foul on the outside of the box allowed Liz Dyjak to set up a perfect cross that deflected off Howard and the Bearcats' goalkeeper before sophomore Jackie Spellman drove home what proved to be the game-winner, giving NU the 1-0 advantage at the break.
Northeastern came out with the same intensity in the second half, scoring two early goals to put the game out of reach. In the 54th minute, Emma Enstrom one-timed a corner kick from Dyjak past the diving goalkeeper to give the Huskies a two-goal advantage. Just 80 seconds later, redshirt freshman Kristin Kowalik added another piece of insurance after a mis-kick by the goalkeeper gave her an open net for the goal.
The Huskies outshot the Bearcats, 18-8. NU's Cynthia Slowik posted four saves en route to her fourth shutout of the season. Doerner recorded four saves in the losing effort for the Bearcats.
With the win, Northeastern improves to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Huskies return to the field on Sunday afternoon when they host America East rival Stony Brook at 1 p.m.
