The men's basketball team went in search of its first win of the season Sunday at Bradley in its second game of the Las Vegas Invitational, but it came up a bit short, losing 92-86 in front of 8,247 people at the Peoria Civic Center.
The Huskies (0-2) pulled to within four, at 84-80, on a three-pointer by senior Marcus Barnes, but were hurt by their inability to hit free throws down the stretch as well as foul trouble.
Northeastern was just 20-of-36 (55 percent) from the line in the game, including 13-of-24 (55 percent) in the second half. Senior big men Sylbrin Robinson and Cornellius Wright both fouled out with more than five minutes left to play, a major reason why Bradley held a 53-36 advantage on the backboards
Barnes paced the Huskies with 20 points, but had another off night from the field, shooting just 5-of-17. Senior Javorie Wilson (4-of-5 from three-point range) and sophomore Jose Juan Barea (5-of-17 from the floor) each added 18 while senior Jesse Dunn came off the bench to contribute 14, his largest output since he netted 14 against Loyola (Md.) on Jan. 2, 2003.
Both teams had trouble with their footing throughout. Prior to the game, the floor was covered with oil, which was not given enough time to soak in, causing a very slippery surface.
The Huskies head to Las Vegas for their third and final game of the Las Vegas Invitational, a Nov. 25 meeting with Louisiana Monroe. Tip-off is at 5 p.m., 7 p.m. on the East Coast.
