The men's basketball got its first win of the season, and it came in convincing fashion as it beat Louisiana Monroe, 81-65, Tuesday night at Valley High School in its third and final game of the Las Vegas Invitational.
The Huskies jumped out to a 17-1 lead to start the game. The Indians (0-3) didn't score their first field goal until almost eight minutes into the game. Northeastern (1-2) led 43-23 at the half, holding Louisiana Monroe to 16 percent (5-of-32) shooting in that frame.
The Huskies opened their largest lead after a layup by sophomore Jose Juan Barea made it 58-32 with 12:21 left in the game. ULM then went on a 25-10 run, cutting the deficit to 11, at 68-57, after a basket by Wayne Bransom.
After NU took a 30-second timeout, junior Marcus Barnes drilled a three-pointer, and his team cruised from that point on.
Barea and senior Sylbrin Robinson led five Huskies in double figures with 14 points apiece. Senior Javorie Wilson had 13 and was named to the all-tournament team, averaging 15.3 ppg (14-of-19 from the field) in the three contests. Barnes added 11 and freshman Bennet Davis had his first career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The Red and Black won despite shooting just 13 percent (2-of-16) from behind the three-point line and 62 percent (21-of-34) from the charity stripe.
The team concludes its 10-day road trip Saturday, Nov. 29 with a 6 p.m. game at West Virginia.
