Behind junior Marcus Barnes' career-high 31 points, the men's basketball team shocked West Virginia, 91-84, on Saturday night at the WVU Coliseum.
It is NU's second road win over a BIG EAST school in as many years. The Huskies beat Boston College, 72-67, at Conte Forum last season.
Barnes hit the biggest shot of the game, a three-pointer with 1:13 left to play that gave the Huskies (2-2) an 86-78 lead. He was 10-of-22 from the field, including 7-of-12 from long range. The seven three-pointers tie a school record.
Tyrone Sally's three-pointer at the 6:35 mark gave WVU a 72-71 lead, but an 11-0 Huskies run, which included five straight points by senior Javorie Wilson and was capped by a pair of free throws by senior center Cornellius Wright, gave them their largest lead of the game, at 82-72, with 3:54 left to play.
West Virginia (1-1) grabbed a 19-5 lead following a Tyler Relph three-pointer with 13:47 left. The Huskies clawed back, tying it at 25-25 at the 7:22 mark on a jumper by freshman Bennet Davis and taking a 33-32 lead on a Barnes three with 3:40 remaining.
The Mountaineers finished the half with an 8-2 run and led 40-35 at the break.
West Virginia shot 53 percent (31-of-59) from the field, including 57 percent (17-of-30) in the second half, but NU was able to counteract that by making 13-of-25 three-point tries (52 percent).
Sophomore Jose Juan Barea scored 19 points and tied a career high with 10 assists. The Huskies, behind a season-high 12 boards by senior Sylbrin Robinson, out-rebounded the Mountaineers, 49-34.
Northeastern returns home to play Suffolk on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.
