Junior Marcus Barnes' driving layup with 2.4 seconds left gave the men's basketball team a dramatic 59-57 win over Marist Sunday at Matthews Arena.
Barnes struggled from the field all day, making just 4-of-19 shots, but he showed no hesitation in putting up the game-winner with a defender draped all over him.
Prior to Barnes' heroics, Marist's Brandon Ellerbee sank a deep 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to knot the game at 57-57. Ellerbee finished with a game-high 29 points, making 11 of his 13 field goal attempts, including 7-of-8 shots from behind the arc.
Ellerbee's layup with 2:35 left tied the game at 51-51, but Barnes made a pair of free throws and senior Jesse Dunn followed a Barnes miss to put NU up 55-51.
Ellerbee canned another deep shot with 37 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 55-54. Barnes and sophomore Lateef Melvin then each hit a foul shot to get the lead back up to three.
The Huskies (4-4) didn't take their first lead until a layup by senior Syrlbin Robinson at the 12:32 mark of the second half made it a 35-34 game. Their largest lead was 51-46, that after a three by senior Javorie Wilson with 4:29 showing on the clock. Wilson led Northeastern with 23 points and eight rebounds, both season highs.
Barnes was the only other Husky in double figures with 14.
NU shut down Marist's leading scorer, Pierre Monagan, who was just 1-of-11 from the field for two points.
The Red Foxes fall to 1-6 with the loss.
The team's next game, an 8 p.m. showdown with Harvard Friday, Dec. 19 at Solomon Court, will be televised on CN8.
