Suffolk hung around for a while, but in the end the Northeastern men's basketball team was just too strong as it overwhelmed the visiting Rams, 98-56, on Tuesday night at Solomon Court.
Back-to-back three-pointers by the Rams' Scott Meier at the 18:27 mark carved NU's lead to 47-30, but that's as close as Suffolk (1-3) got in the second half. The Huskies (3-2) scored the next 12 points – seven by junior Marcus Barnes – and cruised the rest of the way.
The Huskies made their first six shots from the field to start the game in jumping ahead 16-9.
Suffolk cut the deficit to five, at 19-14, after a Meier three-pointer with 10:52 left, but NU scored 14 of the next 16 points to widen the margin to 33-16. Barnes and senior Javorie Wilson netted five and four points, respectively, in that stretch.
A three-pointer by senior Sylbrin Robinson with just under two minutes left gave Northeastern its largest lead of the first half, at 45-22.
Wilson paced the Huskies with a season-high 22 points (7-of-9), while Barnes added 21 (8-of-12), the fourth time this season he has scored at least 20 points. With sophomore Jose Juan Barea missing the game due to a knee injury, Barnes also assumed much of the point guard duties, dishing out six assists. The only other NU player in double figures was Robinson, with 11.
Suffolk was led by Meier's 22.
The Huskies shot 57 percent (37-of-64) from the floor as opposed to 39 percent (22-of-57) for the Rams.
Northeastern heads to Bronx, N.Y., on Saturday, Dec. 6 for a 7 p.m. clash with Fordham.
