The Northeastern men's basketball got a stiffer test than it expected from Curry Monday night at Solomon Court, but behind junior Marcus Barnes' 28 points it prevailed, 85-56.
The Colonels (1-6) scored the game's first seven points, and took their largest lead at 12-4 on a basket by Stephen Prescod with 12:32 left in the first half.
A Keenan Small alley-oop at the 10:40 mark made it 16-10, but Northeastern (6-5) went on a 17-1 run over the next 6:35, punctuated by a dunk by freshman Bennet Davis, to grab a 27-17 advantage. The Huskies led 38-25 at the break.
Curry's Michael Mohrin nailed a 3-pointer 1:16 into the second half to cut the deficit to 10 at 38-28, but the Huskies answered right back, out-scoring Curry 18-5 over the next 6:29 to open up a 56-33 lead.
The Colonels refused to go away, whittling the margin to 60-45 on a Small 3-ball with 7:46 to go, but they got no closer as junior Jose Juan Barea finally came alive, scoring nine of his 12 points in the final 4:20 to help seal the win.
Senior Sylbrin Robinson had a huge game as he posted his first double-double of the season with 14 points and 16 rebounds. The 16 boards tie a career high. Freshman Bobby Kelly tallied a career-high 13 points and was a menace on the defensive end, registering five steals and four blocks.
Small led the Colonels with 19 points and nine rebounds. Marcus Jones had 12 points and eight assists in a losing cause.
The Huskies forced 27 turnovers and held a 40-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
Northeastern opens up conference play Friday, Jan. 2 at home with a 7 p.m. game against Stony Brook.
