After 25 minutes of back-and-forth basketball, Fordham took control of the action in its game against Northeastern on Sunday, out-scoring the Huskies 23-3 over an eight-and-a-half minute stretch in an 80-59 Ram victory in front of a crowd of 1,186 at Rose Hill Gym.
Senior forward Sylbrin Robinson's layup at the 14:34 mark tied the game at 47-47, but Fordham (2-3) then went on its game-deciding run. Jermaine Anderson scored nine points, Michael Haynes eight and Mark Jarrell-Wright six over that stretch. Haynes led a quintet of Rams in double figures with 25 points.
Northeastern (3-3) went cold from the field during that time as it failed to score for almost seven minutes. Junior guard Marcus Barnes' free throw with 5:45 left to play was the Huskies' first point since Barnes' three-pointer at the 12:28 mark. He was the only Husky in double figures with 21 points.
Fordham caught fire in the game's final 20 minutes, when it shot 68 percent (19-of-28) from the field.
The Huskies clearly were affected by the absence of sophomore point guard Jose Juan Barea. They turned the ball over 20 times, leading to 33 Ram points. Fordham had just nine turnovers in the game.
The first half was tightly contested. Fordham opened its biggest first-half lead at 13-8, but Barnes scored five straight points to even the score at 13-13. NU's largest advantage in the frame was two at 26-24, that coming after a pair of Barnes free throws with 8:35 left.
Jermaine Anderson's floater in the lane with eight second left gave the Rams a 36-35 lead at the break.
The Huskies' next game is Friday, Dec. 12, when they hit the road to face Villanova at 7 p.m.
