The Northeastern men's basketball team lost a tough-fought America East contest at Binghamton, 66-54, on Sunday afternoon. With the loss NU falls to 14-13 on the season and 7-7 in league play, while the Bearcats improve to 14-11 overall and 9-6 in conference action.
The Huskies shared the ball well on offense as four players scored in double figures, led by Javorie Wilson's 13 points. Aaron Davis (12 points), Jamaar Walker (12 points) and Cornellius Wright (11 points) were the other Huskies in double digits.
The Bearcats were paced by Anthony Green all afternoon as the Bearcat scored 16 points, including eight clutch free throws down the stretch, and added a career-high 13 assists. Seven-footer Nick Billings was huge for Binghamton as he tallied 12 points, eight rebounds and tied a career-high and school record with 10 blocks.
Binghamton outscored NU 40-29 in the second half to cruise to the 12-point victory, which was actually closer then the scoreboard showed. With 1:41 left in the game the Huskies trailed by just four, 58-54. Binghamton then closed the game on an 8-0 run to come away with the win.
The Bearcats took a 26-25 lead to the locker room despite trailing by as many as eight points in the first half. Both teams started off the game even as the score was knotted at 8-8 with 15:13 to go in the half.
Northeastern then reeled off a 10-2 run to take an 18-10 lead with 11:51 left in the first frame. The Huskies later led 24-17 with 5:26 to go before Sylbrin Robinson picked up his third personal foul of the half at the 5:07 mark.
With Robinson, NU's top defender and shot-blocking threat, on the bench, Binghamton responded by closing the half on an 8-0 run to take a one-point lead at intermission. BU's last three field goals were monstrous alley-oops from Green to Billings that not only gave the Bearcats the momentum, but also the lead.
Walker was the half's leading scorer for NU with 10 points and five rebounds. Billings also had 10 points for the Bearcats, while Green posted a school-record nine assists with no turnovers in the first 20 minutes of action.
The Huskies were once again without freshman point guard and leading scorer Jose Juan Barea as he sat out his third straight game due to an NCAA eligibility issue. He will return for NU's next home game, Feb. 26 against Albany.
