Stony Brook 78, Northeastern 60

Northeastern had its four-game win streak snapped and America East opponent Stony Brook extended its win streak to six as the Seawolves defeated the Huskies 78-60 on Wednesday night at Solomon Court. The Huskies fall to 12-11 overall and 5-5 in league action, while Stony Brook improves to 11-9 on the season and 5-4 in the conference.

Freshman Jose Juan Barea led NU with 19 points, while sophomore Aaron Davis added 17. Stony Brook was paced by Cori Spencer's 17 points and three other Seawolves also scored in double figures. Despite turning the ball over nine fewer times (20-11), NU was outshot (59.5 percent to 39.1 percent) and outrebounded (36-27) by the Seawolves. The Huskies were just 5-24 (20.8 percent) from three-point land, compared to SBU's 5-12 (41.7 percent).

After trailing by 26 at the half, NU came out of the locker room fired up. The Huskies went on a quick 9-0 run, spanning 1:55, as they cut the Stony Brook lead to 17, 39-22, with 18:05 left to play.

The Seawolves stopped the bleeding as they scored on consecutive possessions, increasing their bulge to 18, 43-25, with 16:56 to go. The Huskies reeled off six straight points, trimming the SBU lead to 12, 43-31, at the 14:43 mark.

Through the first 5:17 of the second half, NU outscored SBU 18-4 overall and took control of the game's momentum. Davis and Barea were the catalysts of NU's run as they netted eight points and six points, respectively, over that span.

The Huskies crept within 10 points on a Davis layup, pulling NU within 10, 49-39, at the 10:22 mark. The Huskies would get no closer the rest of the way. Stony Brook calmed the Husky offense as the Seawolves ripped off a decisive 6-0 run to take a 16-point lead, 55-39, with 8:48 showing. The 16-point deficit was too much for NU to overcome as the Seawolves cruised to the 78-60 victory.

Following one of the worst first halves in NU basketball history, the Huskies trailed Stony Brook 39-13 at intermission. NU shot just 20.7 percent (6-29) from the field, compared to the Seawolves' scorching 65.2 percent (15-23). NU was 1-11 from beyond the arc (9.1 percent) and was outrebounded 18-14.

Stony Brook came out hot as the Seawolves gained a quick 16-2 lead with 8:40 remaining in the first frame. NU started off the game 1-14 from the field with seven turnovers before a Cornellius Wright dunk at 16:44 snapped an 8:24 scoring drought. Wright also would score on NU's next possession, cutting the SBU lead to 10, 16-6, with 7:50 left, but the Huskies would get no closer the rest of the half. The Seawolves outscored NU 23-7 over the final 7:50 to take a 26-point lead to the break, 39-13.

The Stony Brook offense was paced by Bobby Santiago's nine points, while Wright led NU with six. Wright, Barea (four points) and Davis (three points) were the only Huskies to score through the first 20 minutes as NU tallied just 13 points, a season-low for a half.

Northeastern next heads to New Hampshire to face the Wildcats on Saturday at 1 p.m.
