Northeastern 75, New Hampshire 61

Freshman Jose Juan Barea scored a career-high 28 points to lead Northeastern to a 75-61 victory over America East foe New Hampshire on Saturday in Durham, N.H. Barea scored 19 of his 28 points in the first half. NU improves to 13-11 overall and 6-5 in league action. In the loss UNH falls to 3-19 on the season and 1-10 in conference play.

Barea's 28 points led all scorers, while teammate Javorie Wilson added 17 in the winning effort. The Wildcats were paced by Jeff Senulis (18 points and 10 rebounds) and Kyle Peterson (11 points).

After trailing 39-33 at the break, UNH came out for the second half hot. The Wildcats used a 10-3 run to take a one-point lead, 43-42, with 17:08 remaining. The teams played fairly even for about the next 10 minutes, until NU began to pull away. The Huskies closed the game on a 16-6 run over the final 5:45 to produce the 14-point victory.

New Hampshire started off the game strong as the Wildcats jumped out to an early 11-4 lead at the 13:01 mark. The Huskies opened the game a little sluggishly again as they connected on just two of their first nine field goal attempts before they battled back.

Northeastern reeled off an 11-4 run of its own to tie the game at 15-15 with 9:12 left in the first frame. A Ben Sturgill dunk at the 8:06 marked the end of a 6-0 spurt by the Wildcats to give them a 21-15 advantage.

The Huskies then unleashed an 11-0 run to take a 26-21 lead with 6:17 to go. Two three-point field goals by Aaron Davis and Adrian Martinez, combined with five points from Barea, made up the key run.

NU would later push its lead to a first-half high 13 points, 38-25, with 3:04 remaining. UNH would close the gap to six, 39-33 at intermission. After their slow start, the Huskies closed the half shooting 12-16 from the floor in the final 13 minutes.

The story of the first half was Barea as he tallied a game-high 19 points on 6-11 shooting, while going 7-9 from the charity stripe. Barea was able to attack the Wildcat defense with penetration and get himself to the line at will.

Over the final 7:18 of the first half, Barea was NU's offense. The 5'11 point guard scored 13 points and assisted on the Huskies' other three baskets, two of which were three-pointers.

Next up for Northeastern is Maine on Wednesday, Feb. 12 in Orono (7:30 p.m.).
