Chris Emanuele had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and Justin Hedrick improved to 2-0 as Northeastern defeated Oral Roberts 8-6 to even a weekend series at J.L. Johnson Stadium in Tulsa, Okla, on Saturday.
The NU win snapped ORU's six-game winning streak and drops the Golden Eagles to 12-10 overall. The Huskies improve to 4-5 with the win.
Down 8-4 entering the bottom of the ninth, ORU plated a run on an error and another on an RBI fielder's choice by Scott Modeste. Dennis Bigley then doubled Modeste to second with two outs, but Kevin Lamb grounded out to end the game as NU reliever Tim Bush closed out the game to earn his first career save.
The game was back and forth until NU took a late lead. The Huskies showed remarkable resilience throughout the game, answering every ORU rally in the following half inning. The Golden Eagles, meanwhile, couldn't capitalize on several opportunities, leaving 12 runners on base.
Northeastern grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Emanuele led off with a single and eventually came home on a Brian Nutting ground out. ORU tied it on Ryan Welborn's RBI double in the bottom of the third. The Huskies came right back with two runs in the top of the fourth for a 3-1 lead. Emanuele again was the catalyst, delivering a two-out RBI double. Fellow freshman Arman Sidhu then followed with a single to score Emanuele.
Lamb scored on an error in the fifth to make it a 3-2 game, and Matt VanDerBosch scored on a passed ball in the sixth, tying the game at three. But again Northeastern answered, taking a 5-3 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh.
After ORU trimmed the Husky lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh, NU scored three runs in the top of eighth for an 8-4 lead. Bush, who played first base before his relief appearance on the mound, laced a two-run single to highlight the scoring for NU.
Hedrick (2-0) picked up the win for Northeastern, allowing four runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings with nine strikeouts and six walks. Alex Chalfant (0-1) was the loser for ORU, allowing two runs in two thirds of an inning.
Kris Kline started for ORU and went 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, but he walked five batters and struck out none. Welborn led ORU with a 4-4 effort. VanDerBosch finished 3-4 with an RBI and two runs, and Lamb went 2-4. Bush knocked in three for the Huskies, while Emanuele scored three times. Brad Czarnowski had two hits for the second straight game.
