Northeastern won the consolation game of the Beanpot Tournament over Massachusetts 6-1 on Thursday afternoon at Fenway Park. The win snapped the Huskies' four-game losing streak and improved their record to 8-16 on the season. NU got a solid pitching performance from the trio of Jordan Thomson, Brendan Ryan and Paul Koslowski to bounce back from a 13-7 loss the previous night against Boston College.
Sophomore Tim Bush went 4-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Koslowski picked up his first win of the season by pitching four innings in relief, giving up one run on three hits and striking out three batters. Jeff Maher and Koslowski both went 2-4. The NU victory was the first over the Minutemen in the Beanpot, breaking a three-game skid with the most recent loss coming in the 2000 championship game.
The Huskies jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first. With two outs, Koslowski singled to left field and then scored when Jeff Heriot belted his second home run in as many days at Fenway Park. Heriot sent a Jeremy Demers pitch into the stands just over the right field bullpen. Bush kept the inning going with a single up the middle. Maher brought Bush home with a sharply hit double down the right-field line to wrap up the scoring in the inning.
Northeastern struck again with two outs in the top of the third, as Bush started things off with an infield single. Maher knocked in Bush for the second time on the afternoon with a double off the Green Monster. Catcher Matt Morizio hit a shallow fly ball to left that looked to be the third out until it got caught up in the wind. The ball dropped in for a double, scoring Maher and giving NU a 5-0 advantage.
Massachusetts finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jeff Altieri hit a sacrifice fly to left field, which scored Cullan Maumus from third.
NU added an insurance run in the top of the seventh for a 6-1 advantage when Bush hit a bloop single to center that scored freshman Chris Emanuele from second.
The Huskies will return to action tomorrow and again on Sunday against Hartford for two America East doubleheaders. The action will get underway at Friedman Diamond on Friday at noon and Sunday at 1 p.m.
