Brendan Ryan threw a complete game to lead Northeastern to a 4-0 win and a shutout sweep of an America East doubleheader against Hartford at Friedman Diamond on Sunday. Junior Jordan Thomson blanked the Hawks 3-0 in game one of the twinbill.
The Huskies improved to 11-17 overall and 5-7 in the conference with the sweep, while Hartford continued its poor season, falling to 4-24-1 and 2-6 in America East. Ryan, who came into the game with a 9.30 ERA, had his best performance of the season, scattering five hits with five strikeouts and just one walk to earn his first win of 2003 (1-3).
Chris Emanuele gave the Huskies a 3-0 lead in the third inning with a bases-loaded double down the left field line. Matt Morizio started the uprising with a single and Arman Sidhu followed with another base hit. Brad Czarnowski then beat out an infield single, loading the bases for Emanuele, who ripped one just fair to left field.
Hartford threatened in the fifth as Brian Eck led off with a single and then Josh Topp was hit by a Ryan pitch to make it first and second with no outs. Matt Younghans then executed a nice sacrifice bunt to move up the runners, but Ryan induced consecutive comebackers to squelch any rally. The Hawks put two men on with two outs in the sixth, but again Ryan got out of the jam unblemished.
Omar Pena delivered an insurance run in the last of the sixth with a two-out single that scored Tim Bush, who had tripled to deep left-center. Ryan worked a perfect seventh to close out the Hawks.
