Northeastern junior Justin Hedrick tossed a complete-game two-hitter, striking out 11 batters in seven innings, as the Huskies (16-19) downed visiting Pace (9-37) in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader Saturday at Friedman Diamond.
Jeff Heriot (four RBIs, two runs), Tim Bush (two RBIs, two runs) and Omar Pena (two RBIs) all went 3-4 for Northeastern. Heriot and Paul Koslowski both homered for NU.
Hedrick (5-1) allowed singles in the first and seventh innings and walked four batters. In the first inning, he loaded the bases with one out, then gave up a sacrifice fly for the only run of the game and fanned the following batter to get out of the jam. In the fourth, with two runners on and one out, Hedrick struck out the next two batters to stave off the rally.
After falling behind, 1-0, in the top of the first, NU responded with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning and never trailed again. The first was highlighted by doubles by Mike Steinberg and Pena.
In the third inning, Pena hit an RBI double to increase NU's lead to 4-1. In the fourth, Koslowski belted a solo shot over the right field fence to put the Huskies up 5-1.
NU broke open the game in the sixth inning with five insurance runs. Bush drove in two runs with a double down the left field line and Heriot smashed a three-run homer over the wall in left field.
