In a game that lived up to the hype, Northeastern and Boston University went down to the wire Saturday afternoon, with the Terriers coming away with a 76-74 win in front of 2,805 fans at Matthews Arena.
The game, which featured 11 ties and 13 lead changes, was tied at 71 apiece with 1:45 to go when BU's Chaz Carr made a layup to put the Terriers (13-4, 7-1) up two.
D'wan Youmans made one of two free throws to bring the Huskies (11-8, 5-3) within one, at 73-72, with 54 seconds to play.
On BU's next possession, Jason Grochowalski drove the lane, jumped in the air and fired a pass under the basket to Shaun Wynn, who laid it in to put BU up three.
The Huskies responded with a Javorie Wilson layup with 10 seconds showing on the clock, cutting the deficit to one, at 75-74.
Grochowalski was fouled and made one of two from the line, giving NU one last chance, but Jose Juan Barea's runner in the lane was off the mark and the Terriers escaped with the victory.
BU led 37-34 at the break and widened its lead to eight twice, the last time on Shaun Wynn's fast-break layup with 13:17 showing on the clock.
The Huskies then went on a 10-2 run, capped by a Barea three-point play, to tie it at 53 all with 11:27 left. Neither team led by more than three points the rest of the way.
Barea led all scorers with 29 points on 11-for-24 shooting. Wilson was the only other Husky in double figures, with 14.
Grochowalski paced BU with 20 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Carr scored 16, Wynn added 13, and Kevin Gardner chipped in 10.
The Huskies forced 19 Terrier turnovers to their 11, but BU out-rebounded the home team, 45-30.
The 2,805 people in attendance is the largest crowd for an NU home game since its Dec. 30, 1995 meeting with Duke.
Northeastern will try to snap its current two-game losing streak when it heads to Orono, Maine to take on the Black Bears on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m.
