Northeastern 82, Maine 79

Jose Juan Barea scored a season-high 33 points, including a layup with 47 seconds left that broke a 79-79 tie, to lead Northeastern to an 82-79 win over Maine Wednesday night in front of 2,341 at Alfond Arena.

Barea drove the right side of the lane and put up a tough floater that banked off the glass and went in, giving the Huskies (12-8, 6-3) an 81-79 lead.

On Maine's next possession, Bennet Davis came up with the defensive play of the game, blocking Mark Flavin's shot from in close.

D'wan Youmans got the rebound and was fouled with 30 seconds left. He made one of two free throws to put NU up 82-79.

Eric Dobson missed a difficult three-point attempt Maine's next time down the floor, and Youmans, who finished with a career-high 12 points, again grabbed the board and went to the line for a 1-and-1.

He missed the first shot, giving the Black Bears (11-7, 5-4) one last chance, but Ludmil Hadjisotirov's three-pointer was off the mark.

Barea's performance was similar to the last time NU faced Maine, in last year's America East quarterfinals. In that game, Barea hit a game-winning three-pointer with under a second remaining and finished with a career-high 38 points.

The Black Bears took a 47-43 lead on a pair of Joe Campbell free throws with 16:25 to play, but Northeastern out-scored them 26-11 over the next 9:02 to take its largest lead of the game, at 69-58, with 7:23 remaining. Barea scored 11 points in that stretch, nine of which came on a trio of threes.

The 6'0 sophomore made 11 of 23 shots from the floor, including a career-high seven shots from behind the arc.

A Barea layup at the 6:13 mark again put NU ahead by 11, but Maine scored 17 of the next 23 points, tying the game at 77-77 with 1:28 showing on ther clock.

Barea and Flavin each hit two free throws to even things at 79-79, and Barea followed with the game-deciding basket.

The Huskies took a 12-7 lead five-and-a-half minutes into the game, but Maine went on a 16-3 run to grab a 27-17 advantage. NU headed into the locker room only down one, at 34-33, thanks to a deep three-pointer by Barea at the buzzer.

Marcus Barnes pitched in with 14 points.

Maine had four players in double figures, led by Flavin's 18.

The Huskies host New Hampshire Saturday, Jan. 31 at 1 p.m.
