Northeastern 1, Boston U. 0

The women's soccer team came home with a 1-0, double-overtime win over Boston University in the first round of the America East Tournament at Nickerson Field on Tuesday, Nov. 2.

A shot blasted into the net at 107:40 off the foot of junior midfielder Jessie Haidamaka ended the game. Junior midfielder Jessica Pfeifer took the assist after crossing the ball into the middle, lining up Haidamaka for the game-winner.

Northeastern came out aggressive on offense, but it was its defense that really stepped up to hold BU scoreless throughout the match. The Terriers outshot the Huskies, 15-5, but never got one past the line of defense.

Sophomore goalie Mariel Wilner made six saves, while NU's defenders, freshman Laura Johnson, sophomore Sandra Karlsdottir, junior Jackie Spellman and senior Andi Matthews, took care of BU's other nine shots.

BU came up short on a number of opportunities to end the game late in the second half. The Terriers also had two corner kicks toward the end of the first overtime, and five in the first period, but failed to convert.

The win advances Northeastern into the second round of the tournament. The Huskies take on Binghamton on Friday at 11 a.m. The Bearcats host the rest of the games since they are the number one seed going into the tournament.
