Junior guard Jose Juan Barea put on a show Saturday night, scoring Northeastern's last 14 points and 19 of its last 21, including a fallaway three-pointer with nine-tenths of a second left, to lead the Huskies to an 88-85 win in the consolation game of the Pepsi Marist Classic in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Barea finished with 35 points, the second most in his career after the 38 he scored against Maine in the 2003 America East tournament. He was 11-of-23 from the floor and 6-of-12 from behind the arc. In the Huskies two games in Poughkeepsie, Barea averaged 31 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals en route to being named to the all-tournament team.
The Huskies (1-1) went up 48-45 on a three-point play by junior Janon Cole, but Cornell scored 10 straight points to regain the lead, at 55-48, with 15:21 to play. Cole just missed a double-double, with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Senior Marcus Barnes drained three-pointers on consecutive possessions, the second one giving NU a 62-61 lead with 10:35 remaining. Barnes scored 23 in the game.
A 10-2 run by Cornell (0-2) gave it a 73-67 lead with 7:20 showing on the clock. Lenny Collins scored five during that stretch on a three-pointer and two free throws.
Barea then took over, scoring 19 points in the game's final 6:56. He hit four three-pointers in that span, all in the last 2:26.
Northeastern was down 12-8 early on, but it went on a 7-0 run to take a 15-12 lead. Baskets by sophomore Bennet Davis and Cole were sandwiched around a Barea three-pointer.
Cornell's Eric Taylor made two free throws and Cody Toppert put in a layup to put their team up 19-18, but the Huskies scored the next six points to take a 24-19 lead. Toppert paced the Big Red with 20.
Graham Dow then scored eight straight points for Cornell, on two three-pointers and a layup, as the Big Red went ahead, 27-26.
A Khaliq Gant three pushed the Big Red advantage to 30-26, but Barnes led the Huskies on an 8-0 run to go up 34-30. Barnes made a layup and hit a three, and then fed junior Aaron Davis for a trey.
Cornell closed the half on a 9-2 run to take a 39-36 lead into the locker room.
Northeastern opened the second half on a 7-0 run. Aaron Davis canned a three, Bennet Davis scored on a putback, and Barea stuck a transition jumper.
The Huskies take on Harvard in Cambridge, Mass., on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m.
