Junior Jose Juan Barea and senior Marcus Barnes combined for 47 points, and Northeastern used a 20-1 closing run to claim an 84-68 win over Massachusetts on Wednesday night in front of 3,679 fans at the Mullins Center.
The win is the Huskies' first over the Minutemen in Amherst since Dec. 13, 1986.
Jeff Viggiano's bucket with 6:23 remaining put the Minutemen up 67-64, but the Huskies out-scored the Minutemen 20-1 from that point on. Barea scored eight of those points, while junior Aaron Davis, who finished with a season-high 13 points, had six. Barea's putback with 5:17 remaining gave the Huskies a 69-67 lead, and they did not relinquish it.
Barea, who was 10-of-16 from the floor, added nine assists and six rebounds to go along with his 24 points. Barnes was just 5-of-16 from the field, but he did much of his damage from the charity stripe, from where he went 11-of-13. He had 23 in the game.
The Huskies (2-2) held UMass without a point for more than five minutes in the second half, and scored eight of their own in that time, including back-to-back three-pointers by freshman Shawn James and Barnes, after which they led 60-55 with 9:39 to play.
The Minutemen (2-1) opened the second half on an 10-1 run to pull even at 47-47. Rashaun Freeman, who finished with a team-high 18, tied the game on a baseline spin move.
Northeastern scored the game's first six points and led 14-4 with 15:57 left in the first. Barnes had eight of those points, on a breakaway layup, a three-pointer and three free throws.
NU was superb from the line, making 13 of 15 attempts from the stripe.
The Huskies opened up a 20-8 advantage with 13:11 remaining on an alley-oop from Barea to sophomore Bobby Kelly, but the Minutemen went on a 9-2 run – capped by Anthony Anderson's three from the top of the key – to cut it to 22-17 with 10:39 to play.
After two Barnes foul shots put NU up 29-19, UMass ran off 11 straight points to take its first lead of the game at 30-29. Lawrence Carrier scored five points and Anderson four in that stretch.
Northeastern closed the half on a 16-7 run, which included a Barea three-pointer from nearly thirty feet with three seconds remaining, to take a 46-37 lead into the locker room.
NU forced 19 UMass turnovers, scoring 24 points off of them. The Huskies also held an 18-8 advantage in fast-break points.
Northeastern hosts Wright State on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m.
