Northeastern 75, Stony Brook 69

Junior guard Jose Juan Barea scored 30 points, but it was a key assist that was instrumental in giving Northeastern a 75-69 win over Stony Brook in its first America East game of the season Tuesday night at the SBU Sports Complex.

With the Huskies (4-4, 1-0 America East) clinging to a 66-65 lead with just over a minute left, Barea zipped a pass to freshman Shawn James on the baseline, and he jammed it home to put NU up three. James scored just four points, but had a career-high 13 rebounds and six blocks, one shy of his school record.

Hardy then missed a three, and Barea got the rebound. He made both free throws to ice the game.

The Huskies led 13-7 on two free throws by sophomore Bobby Kelly, but Stony Brook ran off 11 of the next 13 points to assume an 18-15 advantage.

After Antwan Hardy's three put the Seawolves up 21-17, NU closed the half on a 15-6 run to take a 32-27 lead into the locker room. That stretch included nine points by Barea and a reverse layup by junior transfer Jeff Farmer, his first basket in a Husky uniform.

Stony Brook (4-4, 0-1) stormed out of the break, out-scoring Northeastern 12-2 in first 3:31 to go ahead 39-34 and prompt head coach Ron Everhart to take a timeout. Hardy had seven in that span.

Kelly's straightaway three coming out of the timeout pulled the Huskies within two, but Stony Brook extended its lead to eight on a Jairus McCollum bucket.

With the Seawolves leading 47-39, Northeastern ripped off 12 straight points -- the last eight by Barnes -- to jump in front, 51-47. Barnes sandwiched two three-pointers around a pair of free throws.

A Mike Popoko three stopped the run, but the Huskies scored seven consecutive points to take their largest lead of the game, at 58-50, with just under nine minutes left.

The Seawolves hung tough and eventually tied it at 60-60 on Cori Spencer's layup with 4:04 to play.

Barea's difficult layup put NU up 64-60 with 2:49 left, but Bobby Santiago made a three to cut it to one. Barnes then followed his own miss and put in a layup to increase the bulge to 66-63. Barnes finished with 16 points, 14 of those in the second half.

Two Hardy foul shots made it a 66-65 game, but Barea took over from there.

Northeastern travels to Worcester, Mass., to take on Holy Cross Monday, Dec. 27 at 7 p.m.
