Northeastern's 2004-05 home opener was spoiled by Wright State, which ending the game Saturday night with an 11-2 run to come away with a 59-53 win in front of a boisterous crowd of 1,704 at Solomon Court.
The Raiders held the Huskies to 28 percent (9-for-32) shooting in the second half, including eight percent (1-for-13) from long range. NU made just three of its 23 three-point attempts in the game.
NU (2-3) took a 51-48 lead on a layup by freshman Shawn James with six minutes remaining. That, however, was the last field goal the Huskies made, as they missed their last 11 shots from the field.
Zakee Boyd tied it at 51-51 with a free throw, then put WSU (4-2) ahead for good with a three-pointer with 4:17 left.
Two free throws by senior Marcus Barnes brought the Huskies within one at 54-53, but Boyd put the nail in the coffin with another trey, this one with 1:28 to play.
Barnes paced the Huskies with 13 points, while junior Jose Juan Barea had 12. Both were 5-for-16 from the field. Barea added nine rebounds, one short of his career high. Freshman Mark Washington was 5-for-5 from the field for a career-high 10 points.
James recorded five blocks, tying him for third on the school's single-game list. He set the NU mark of seven against Harvard on Nov. 27.
Boyd finished with 14, while Drew Burleson led the Raiders with 19.
The game was tight throughout, featuring 10 lead chancges and nine ties. The final margin of six represents the largest lead by either squad.
Wright State was able to get to the line more frequently than Northeastern. The Raiders were 11-for-16 from the charity stripe as opposed to just 4-for-7 for the Huskies.
The 53 points is the fewest for Northeastern since a 51-50 win over Hartford on Jan. 31, 2003.
The Huskies take on defending national champion Connecticut Monday, Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Storrs, Conn.
