Junior Jose Juan Barea scored 27 points to lead Northeastern to a much-needed, 73-68 win over Detroit Wednesday night in front of 1,428 fans at Solomon Court
Coming off consecutive subpar games in which he scored a total of 22 points, Barea made nine of 13 shots from the floor to lead the Huskies (3-4) to victory. He also contributed six assists, three rebounds and two steals.
NU jumped out to a 17-2 lead to start the game, with Barea scoring 10 of those points.
The Huskies grabbed a 29-10 advantage on a Barea layup with 7:16 left in the first, but the Titans (1-5) closed the half on a 20-5 run to make it a 34-30 game at the break.
Northeastern started the second half on a 15-5 run, punctuated by senior Marcus Barnes' three-pointer with 14:30 to play.
Detroit countered with an 11-2 spurt of its own, with David Bailey scoring seven of his team-high-tying 17 points in that stretch.
Freshman Shawn James, quickly becoming a favorite with the Husky faithful, gave NU a 66-55 lead on a layup with 3:40 remaining. James finished with 12 points, five rebounds and six blocks, tying Changa Adams for second on the school's single-game list.
The Titans would not go away, as James Thues nailed a trey with 15 seconds to go to bring them within three at 69-66. Two free throws by sophomore Bobby Kelly gave NU a five-point cushion, but Bailey put in a layup with three seconds left to again cut the deficit to three.
Barea was then fouled and made both shots to ice the game.
Jon Goode tied Bailey for the team scoring lead with 17 points.
NU was out-rebounded, 34-19, but made up for it by forcing 24 Titan turnovers, leading to 32 points.
The Huskies set season bests in field goal percentage (50 percent, 21-of-42) and three-point percentage (47 percent, 8-of-17). They break for fall exams and return to action Tuesday, Dec. 21 with a conference matchup at Stony Brook at 7 p.m.
