Northeastern 73, Stony Brook 61

Northeastern out-scored Stony Brook 53-26 in the second half, including a 28-3 run midway through the period, to overcome a 15-point halftime deficit and claim a 73-61 win Thursday night at SB Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (6-14, 3-8) came out of the break and widened the lead to 39-21 after a Mitchell Beauford bucket at the 18:32 mark. They led 45-30 with 15:11 left, but Northeastern responded with a 28-3 run over the next 9:16 to take a 58-48 advantage. The stretch was highlighted by a quintet of three-pointers by Marcus Barnes, who had 17 in the game, all in the second half.

His fifth three gave him 63 on the year, breaking the school record of 62 set by Derrick Lewis in 1988-89.

Stony Brook got it to seven, at 58-51, after a three-point play by Beauford, but it never got any closer.

Beauford led three Seawolves in double figures with 14 points.

Northeastern went from shooting a season-low 23 percent (8-for-35) in the first half to a season-best 63 percent (17-for-27) in the second. It also held a 21-2 advantage in points off turnovers.

On the flip side, the Seawolves shot just 32 percent (9-for-28) after the break as opposed to 48 percent (14-for-29) before it.

Stony Brook took a 7-2 lead to start the game, but Northeastern went on a 15-4 run, which included a trio of Jose Juan Barea three-pointers, to go up 17-11. Barea finished with a game-high 22 points and also dished out seven assists.

The Huskies (14-8, 8-3) then went cold, going scoreless over the next 6:47, while the Seawolves scored 15 straight points to grab a 26-17 advantage. Cornellius Wright's basket with 3:20 left in the half broke NU's drought and cut the margin to 26-19.

SB didn't let up, closing out the half on a 9-1 run to take a 35-20 lead into the locker room. In all, Stony Brook out-scored Northeastern 24-3 over the last 9:53 of the first half.

The Huskies' 20 points is their lowest output in a half this season.

Northeastern hosts Vermont on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. The game will be televised live on CN8.
