Northeastern Huskies

Men's Basketball

Northeastern 82, Hartford 69

Senior Marcus Barnes scored 22 points to lead five Huskies in double figures as Northeastern beat Hartford, 82-69, Wednesday night at Reich Family Pavilion. The win was head coach Ron Everhart's 50th at Northeastern.

Northeastern (8-6, 4-1) scored the game's first nine points, two of which came on an alley-oop from junior Jose Juan Barea to sophomore Bennet Davis.

The Huskies kept Hartford off the scoreboard until the 15:54 mark of the first, when Aaron Cook ended the drought with a three-pointer. That started an 11-3 Hawk run, which was capped by consecutive baskets by Bo Taylor.

Up 18-15, Northeastern scored nine unanswered points to open up a 12-point lead, its largest of the first half. Barnes had five points in that stretch.

Hartford (5-9, 1-4) closed the half on a 12-4 run to get within four at 31-27.

After Cook's three-point play made it a 36-34 game, NU went on an 11-1 run -- punctuated by Barnes' fourth three of the game -- to go up 12, matching its biggest lead of the game.

Hartford responded by rattling off the next eight points to narrow the gap to 47-43.

It was during this time that the game was delayed 30 minutes because of an apparent back injury to Hartford junior guard Charles Ford.

Back-to-back threes by junior Aaron Davis and Barnes pushed the NU advantage back up to 12 with just over 10 minutes to play. Barnes canned a season-high five three-pointers.

The Hawks got within seven on a pair of Cook foul shots with 5:44 to play, but junior Janon Cole made a reverse layup, then sank a long jumper to put NU up 67-56.

Barea made two free throws with 3:22 remaining and Barnes added another one seconds later to put the game out of reach. Barea was held to 10 points, tying his season low.

Cole tallied 10 of his career-high 14 points in the final 5:19 en route to recording his first career double-double. He pulled down 10 rebounds, matching his career high.

Other NU players in double figures were junior Aaron Davis (12) and Bennet Davis (10).

The Huskies were 31-of-43 from the charity stripe. The 31 free throws are their most since they dropped in 33 Jan. 20, 1995 against Drexel.

Northeastern hosts UMBC Saturday, Jan. 15 at 1 p.m.
