Senior guard Marcus Barnes scored 20 points on 6-for-12 shooting, and juniors Jose Juan Barea and Aaron Davis each chipped in 17 as Northeastern knocked off UMBC, 77-66, Saturday afternoon in front of 1,154 fans at Solomon Court.
The Huskies (9-6, 5-1) trailed 55-54, but used an 11-2 run, capped by a Barnes three-pointer with 4:41 to play, to put the game away.
Northeastern shot a season-high 54 percent (29-for-54) from the field, including an incredible 67 percent (16-for-24) in the second half, and a season-high 93 percent (13-for-14) from the free throw line.
NU had five players score in double figures, a feat the Huskies accomplished both in their last game, against Hartford, and the last time they battled the Retrievers (Feb. 14, 2004). Junior Janon Cole had 12 points and eight boards, while sophomore Bennet Davis chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds.
Andrew Feeley led UMBC (6-9, 1-5) with 20 points. He was aided by John Zito, who scored 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds.
The victory improves the Huskies' league record to 5-1, marking the second straight year they have started conference play with wins in five of their first six games.
NU will look to extend its three-game winning streak Wednesday, Jan. 19, when it battles the Boston University Terriers at 8 p.m. at Matthews Arena. The game will be shown live on CN8.
