Junior Jose Juan Barea led all scorers with 25 points on 10-for-21 shooting to lead Northeastern to a 65-56 victory over Stony Brook Wednesday night in front of 1,138 fans at Solomon Court.
NU (11-7, 7-2 America East) was in control for most of the game, although the Seawolves took a 37-36 lead on two Cori Spencer free throws less than a minute into the second half.
The Huskies then went on an 11-0 run, starting with sophomore Adrian Martinez's three-pointer. Freshman Mark Washington capped the run with a jumper following a Stony Brook turnover to make it 47-37 with 14:02 left.
The Seawolves (7-11, 2-7) again made it close, cutting the deficit to 51-47 on Hendrik Feist's three-pointer, but the Huskies pulled away by scoring the next six points. Washington hit a layup at 6:02 to increase the NU lead to 57-47.
Northeastern held Stony Brook to 28 percent (7-for-25) shooting in the second half.
Barea was the lone double-digit scorer for the Huskies. He added five assists and four rebounds go along with his game-high point total. Four Huskies -- freshman Shawn James, senior Marcus Barnes, sophomore Bobby Kelly and Martinez -- scored seven points apiece.
Kelly also had a career-high seven rebounds, while James registered four blocks, giving him 64 on the season. He is only three blocks away from tying Reggie Lewis' school record for rejections in a season.
Spencer led a quartet of Seawolves in double figures with 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.
The 56 points allowed are the fewest for the Huskies this season.
Northeastern has now won four in a row over Stony Brook. It keeps pace with Boston University, which beat New Hampshire tonight, for second place in America East.
The Huskies travel to Binghamton on Sunday, Jan. 30 for a 1 p.m. tip-off against the Bearcats.
