Men's Basketball

Northeastern 69, Binghamton 59

Junior Jose Juan Barea scored a game-high 17 points and freshman forward Shawn James broke the school record for blocks in a season as Northeastern downed Binghamton, 69-59, Sunday afternoon at the Events Center in Vestal, N.Y.

Down 3-2, Northeastern (12-7, 8-2 America East) scored 12 straight points to take a 14-3 lead. Barea and junior Aaron Davis scored five points apiece in that stretch.

Senior Marcus Barnes' three-pointer gave the Huskies a 23-8 lead, but Binghamton went on a 15-4 run to cut the deficit to four, 27-23. Schafer Jackson provided the spark for the Bearcats, hitting a three and converting a three-point play.

Junior Janon Cole's strong move and finish opened up a 10-point NU lead with just over a minute left in the half. Binghamton (5-14, 2-8) made it a 38-30 game at intermission after Alex Adediran put in a layup with 35 seconds on the clock.

James' tip-in increased the Husky bulge to 42-32, but Andre Heard's bucket with 15:47 left capped an 11-0 run and gave the Bearcats a 43-42 lead, their first since being up 3-2.

Barnes beat the shot clock with a baseline jumper to regain the lead for Northeastern, but Binghamton rattled off eight straight points to take its largest lead of the game, 51-44, with 11:42 remaining. In all, the Bearcats scored 19 of 21 points in a period of almost seven minutes.

The Huskies came right back with their second 12-0 run of the game, this one bookended by Barnes three-pointers, to regain the lead at 56-51.

James' block of Jordan Fithian at 9:03 of the second half was his 68th of the season, breaking the school record of 67 set by Reggie Lewis in 1985-86.

Jackson sunk a driving layup with 3:48 left to bring Binghamton within three, 62-59.

Barea hit the game's biggest shot, an acrobatic layup with 2:21 to play. He got fouled on the play and hit the ensuing free throw to give NU a 65-59 advantage. Barnes then hit four free throws down the stretch to round out the scoring.

The Huskies out-scored Binghamton 25-8 in the final 11-plus minutes to capture the victory. They held the Bearcats to 28.6 percent (8-for-28) shooting in the second half.

Joining Barea in double figures were Barnes (15 points), James (14) and Davis (14). Barnes pulled down a season-high seven rebounds, while James swatted six shots, giving him 70 on the season.

The Huskies hit the road Wednesday, Feb. 2 to play New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
